Privacy and Your Files
Memni’s core job of reading, indexing, and searching your documents happens on your computer. This page describes the current private development builds; the public release will ship with its own privacy notice. The paid release will use a sign-in to activate your license; your documents and search history are never part of activation.
Data stored locally
Section titled “Data stored locally”Memni keeps the following with the local library or in application-managed local storage:
- document metadata and extracted text;
- OCR output for supported scans and images;
- full-text and meaning-based search indexes;
- tags, custom metadata, and saved searches;
- generated previews and other working data when the library’s security mode allows them.
Derived data can be as sensitive as the original file. Protect the computer and backups that hold the library, not only the source document folder.
Network boundaries
Section titled “Network boundaries”Local-first does not mean the computer can never use a network.
- A file in OneDrive or another synced folder may be online-only. Its provider may download it before Memni can read it, under that provider’s terms.
Memni does not upload document contents or search queries to a Memni-hosted search service. Files in third-party synced folders remain subject to that provider’s behavior and privacy terms.
